Suburb Profile

Paddington is a inner suburb of Brisbane located 2 km west of the CBD. As is common with other suburbs in the area, Paddington is located on a number of steep ridges and hills. It was originally settled in the 1860s. Many original and distinctive Queenslander homes can be found in the suburb, including some of historical significance. Houses are frequently built on stumps, owing to the steep nature of their blocks. Paddington is quite a large inner Brisbane suburb and includes the Governor General’s residence, Fernberg House, and the locality of Rosalie.  Paddington’s famous shopping and dining streets, Given & Latrobe Terraces, are a focal point for locals and visitors alike.  Rosalie Village on the border of Padding and Auchenflower is one of Brisbane’s favourite dining destinations.  All of these things, combined with Paddington’s access to the city, maintain the suburb as one of Brisbane’s premier residential locations.

 

Auchenflower is an inner suburb of Brisbane located 2.5 km west of the CBD, bordering the Brisbane River.  Geographically Auchenflower consists of 2 distinct areas; the undulating area between the River and Milton Rd, and the valleys and ridges to the west.  Auchenflower was used as farm land in the early 1800’s with residential settlement really taking off in the 1880’s.  Many original and distinctive Queenslander homes can be found in the suburb, including some of historical significance.  Auchenflower encompasses the Wesley Hospital, overlooking the Brisbane River, and also the former locality of Torwood.  The suburb remains a very desirable inner Brisbane location, characterized by quiet streets lined with elegant old Queenslander homes, and easy access to the city and local dining and entertainment precincts.

 

Toowong is located 5km west of the Brisbane CBD.  Situated between the Brisbane River and Mt Cootha to the west, Toowong is mostly rolling hills and has little flat land.  Toowong focuses around the bustling commercial centre of Toowong Village while the remainder of the suburb is primarily residential.  The suburb includes very reputable public and private schools.  Toowong has many sites of historical importance including the Toowong Cemetery; Queensland’s largest cemetery is also one of its oldest, established in 1866.  The Regatta and Royal Exchange Hotel’s are two of Brisbane’s favourites, and are both located in fashionable Toowong.  The suburb’s excellent location and great access have made it a very popular Brisbane residential address.

 

Milton is an inner suburb Brisbane bordering the river, situated only 2km west of the central business district.  The residential section of Milton north of Heussler Terrace is characterized by renovated Queenslander houses in quiet urban streets, while most of the remainder of the suburb is a mixture of retail, light industrial and commercial offices.  Milton is also home to the famous Lang Park Stadium, venue to Queensland’s State of Origin games and many other major sporting events.  Close by is the iconic XXXX Brewery, a Milton landmark since 1878 and the State’s largest beer producer.  Running from Milton Rd through to the Brisbane River is the dining and entertainment precinct of Park Road, known through Brisbane for its host of restaurants and bars, Park Rd is a lively pre-game destination.

 

Red Hill is an inner Brisbane suburb about 2kms North West of central Brisbane.  As with many other inner western suburbs, Red Hill is hilly and quite steep in parts.  The suburb is mainly residential, predominately Queenslander style houses, with shops and small businesses located on Musgrave and Waterworks Roads.  The premier feature of Red Hill is St Brigid’s Church, a heritage listed Roman Catholic Church built more than 100 years ago.  Sitting on the crest of the hill on Musgrave Road, St Brigid’s is a characteristic feature of the inner Brisbane skyline.  Red Hill has even gained some cultural significance thanks to Nick Earl’s novel ‘Zig Zag Street’, set in the Red Hill Street of the same name.  The suburb has become a desirable residential address due to its proximity to Brisbane and dominant hill top location.
